NetBEUI Protocol not Available on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003
Question:
The NetBEUI protocol is needed in some network installations.
Windows XP and Server 2003 do not have this protocol available.
Answer:
Installing NetBEUI
1. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and browse to
the Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.
2. Copy Nbf.sys to the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers directory.
3. Copy Netnbf.inf to the C:\Windows\Inf hidden directory.
NOTE: To make a hidden folder viewable, perform the following steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type Explorer, and then press ENTER.
b. Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
c. Under Advanced Settings, click Show hidden files and folders
under the Hidden files and folders Folder.
d. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network
Connections.
4. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then
click Properties.
5. On the General tab, click Install.
6. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
7. Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK.
8. Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the
installation.
9. The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working.
Setting TCP/IP as Primary Protocol
1. Right click on My Network Places.
2. Choose Properties, the Network and Dial-up connections window
will open
3. From the menu at the top choose Advanced/ Advanced Settings
4. Select the Adapters and Bindings Tab
5. In the Bindings for Local Area Connections, verify that Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) is first in the list.
6. If it is not select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the
up arrow at the right until it is first in the list.
7. Click Ok
