Substitute Product for Unavailable Inventory Item
Question:
An inventory item is out of stock. How can I quickly find a
substitute product?
Answer:
The inventory module allows superseded, alternate, or
interchangeable items for any given inventory stock item. Three
fields in the Stock Item Maintenance screen allow for this.
Superseded field: The stock item is automatically replaced by the
chosen stock item entered into the Superseded field.
Once a choice of a substitute item is made in the Superseded field
this substitute item will be selected for any inventory transactions
involving the original stock item. For instance when selling the
original stock item in Point of Sale or Order Entry choosing that
item will result in selling the substitute (Superseded) item.
Alternate field: This field is informational only. The stock item
must be viewed to see what choice is given as an alternate by
looking in this field.
Interchangeable field: This field is informational only. The stock
item must be viewed to see what choice is given as an alternate by
looking in this field.
There is a difference between the Alternate field and the
Interchangeable field; the Interchangeable field is a second
Alternate field in case more than one substitute item is applicable.
