| Payroll for Windows from Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versions (800-388-3038) is in its third year as a Windows product. Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versionss line of accounting products is integrated in design, but the various
modules can be used in a stand-alone environment. Payroll for Windows has a retail price
of $199.50 (for the single user) up to $2,399.50 (for unlimited users) with multiple price
points in between. Visit www.cougarmtnsupport.com for more information. Payroll for Windows does not include the same
functionality as that of its DOS sister. Vendor payments (and 1099s) require the AP
module, and liability checks/deposits to insurance or 401(k) pro-viders require another
type of module. Complete payroll processing will necessarily require the purchase of more
than just the payroll module.
Direct deposit
Payroll for Windows includes two direct deposit
options: direct to your financial institution or via National Payment Corp. Under either
scenario, Payroll for Windows accommodates up to four bank accounts per employee. Pay can
be split among accounts using a percentage or flat-fee.
Checks/deposits to third-party agencies
Payroll for Windows creates an EFTPS report
useful for telephone and coupon filing but does not include the built-in ability to
transmit federal or state tax payments over a modem or direct Internet connection.
This system is purely for payroll. It does not
accommodate printing checks to third-party agencies. Checks of this nature require an
additional module from Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versions -- either the bank reconciliation module
($199.50 for single-user/$349.50 for multi-user) or the Create-A-Check module ($499.50).
User-defined deductions
Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versions built Payroll for
Windows with the ability for unlimited payroll deductions.
Reporting/compliance
Payroll for Windows prints these forms: W-2, W-3
and 941. Noticeably missing are 1099s. Printing 1099s requires the AP module.
Bottom line
Payroll for Windows is in its third generation as
a Windows product, but the interface and processing routines seem like theyve been
in Windows for years. For pure payroll functionality, Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versions is robust.
If you are in the market for a program that handles 1099s or checks to third-party
insurance or 401(k) providers, however, you will need to purchase more modules from Reporting to the MAX including Point of Sale and Non-profit Versionss integrated line of accounting products. Those updating from
Cougars DOS payroll module might be disappointed if they opt only for the
stand-alone payroll module without upgrading their DOS accounting package to Cougar
Mountain Accounting for Windows.
